Courtyard of the Hotel de Paris

The lovely courtyard behind the Hotel de Paris was most likely not used as we today would use a courtyard. Today, we would use this area as a quiet escape for meals or as a gathering place. However, all evidence indicates that Louis did not use his courtyard in this manner. He stored his meat (much of which was raised on his ranch in Middle Park just NE of Kremmling) on meathooks hanging on the west courtyard walls. This would not have been a pleasant place to sit in with the smells and the flies. Additionally, the area may have been used for access to the boiler in the basement.

Chives, which grow in profusion the east courtyard today, imply that the area may have been used by Sophie to grow a few plants or spices; yellow rose bushes flourish along the walls of the building in both the East and West courtyards, providing a pleasant view from inside. Rhubarb is also found growing in the West courtyard today below the west wall which is adorned by a stag.

The only access to the courtyard is from the kitchen, or from the Lion's gate on the Northeast corner of the building, implying it was not intended for guest use. Direct deliveries to the kitchen could have been made through this route. The courtyard also provided access to the annex building behind the hotel where rooms were used for storage and possibly extra office area.
