Wine Cellar of the Hotel de Paris |
In the wine cellar at the Hotel de Paris, Louis Dupuy stored barrels of fine wine from distinguished vintners, then bottled them for the hotel guests' enjoyment. The wine cellar is at the end of a long tunnel. It still contains nine wine barrels, a cider barrel (crystallized cider still at the bottom), Louis's corking machine, "shook" (staves and headings) waiting to be returned to cooperage, discarded rings and other interesting artifacts. Also down the basement stairs of the Hotel de Paris, you will find Dupuy's Haxtun Steam Heater, installed c. 1883 as he was putting the finishing touches on the west wing. The Haxtun provided the cetralized steam heat and hot water right up until 1930 when it was shut down as no longer maintainable. In this area you'll also find a coal bin with stairs leading to the steel delivery doors at the front of the building and a stairway which climbs to the west courtyard. | |
